Through her sculptures, Zhang investigates the distinct binary which divides the boundary between the human body and the sociological identity of its person. Through her use of monstrous, stitched forms, Zhang questions traditional definitions of the body and its parts. By pairing porous materials with hard structures, these works simultaneously contain nods to science fiction alienility as well as that of organic yet rigid structures.
Zhang explores how the body expresses transformation and vulnerability through blurring the lines between life, death, material, and spirit. The biomorphic forms reveal the impermanence and continual evolution of the human experience, emphasizing that the body is not in fact fixed, but rather a fluid and adaptable organic organism which constantly shifts through physical, emotional, and symbolic states of being. A key element in her process is metal, which through her deliberate and precise manipulation, resembles the durability and resilience of bone. Through Zhang’s process of forging and welding, metal transforms from raw material to constructed relics, reflecting the body’s capacity to absorb and transmute energy—much like the cyclical process of decay and renewal. This act of transformation evokes a sense of spiritual transcendence, emphasizing both the strength and fragility of the human body.
This approach encourages viewers to engage with the body’s transformation, prompting deeper reflection on the interconnections between life, death, existence, and disappearance. Ultimately Zhang urges viewers to reconsider the fluidity and complexity of the human condition.
